Have you ever dreamed of starting your own business? If the answer is yes, here are some tips to help you kick-start a career in retail!

Retail involves the direct sales of goods and services to consumers for their personal use. On the other hand, retailers are supermarkets, shops, mobile applications, and online stores that provide those goods and services. Here are a few things you can do right now as a student to help you transition into the retail world.
Get a Part-Time Job!

One of the ways to get a feel of the retail industry is to apply for part-time jobs. Many SPM leavers who do not want to jump into pre-university courses right away can opt to spend a few months working. Plenty of clothing stores, food & beverage outlets and hotels are willing to take in SPM leavers who are looking to work part-time. Not only is working part-time a productive way to spend the holidays, you will learn invaluable soft skills along the way as well. For example, working as waiters and shop assistants will help you pick up good communication and customer service skills. In addition, teamwork and initiative are fostered as well. All these skills will come in handy if you want to start your own business in the future. Also, having a part-time job looks good on your resume and earns you extra pocket money!
Be Familiar with Social Media

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat allow us to communicate with friends and help us share the content we love. However, it is important to build a strong and professional presence on social media if you want a career in retail. For example, having a profile on LinkedIn is a great idea if you want to build a network and make yourself known in the career world. This will be beneficial when you want to search for jobs and connect with people that will help you start your business in the future. Nowadays, internet retailers are increasing by the minute and more companies are using social media as a marketing tool. You need to know how to use social media from a marketing standpoint if you are interested in starting your own business. Therefore, it is helpful to know the basics of social media marketing and stay updated on the latest social media trends.
Study a Degree You Love

Most successful entrepreneurs only started their businesses after graduating! Therefore, it is important to not neglect your studies and enjoy student life while you can. A great tip for aspiring entrepreneurs is to pursue a degree that will help them learn and grow. This is not limited to degrees related to finance, marketing and business, although they provide a good foundation to those wanting to start their own company. It is important to study what you are passionate about. Study culinary arts if you want to open your own café. Learn about design if you want to start your own design firm. The beauty about a career on retail is that there is no specific education path you need to take. Also, if your business does not work out, you can always fall back on your degree and look for other jobs.
With these tips, you are well on your way to starting your career in retail. Owning a business does not happen overnight and takes a lot of hard work, experience and determination. Other than being a business owner, retail covers a wide range of professions, from entry-level positions to C-Level positions. Examples of jobs include shop assistants, customer service managers and store managers.
